Meet Melroy, Seasonal Agricultural Worker from Jamaica

My name is Melroy Samuda; I am from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. This is my eleventh season in Canada, my tenth season at this farm. I like working. That is what we are here for, so I enjoy it. When we are working, we know we are earning for our families.

I came here to make a better life, work and then return home and make something of it. Working in Canada allows me to have a steady income, build my house and maintain my family.

My life back home is a very simple life. Before I came here, I used to work on a construction site as a labourer. It has been a blessing to come here and to experience Canada. Still, people need to know coming here and leaving our families back home is very rough.

My first child is on the way; my baby is due in September, and I am excited to be a dad. This weekend, they are throwing a baby shower and gender reveal party, and then I will find out if it is a boy or a girl.

What was I surprised by in Canada? I was surprised by how hot it was here. I thought it was a cold country, but when I experienced the summer, it was very hot, with a lot of humidity.
