Meet Ivan, Seasonal Agricultural Worker from Mexico

My name is Ivan Ortiz Cuevas, and I’m from Mexico. I’ve been coming to Canada for 22 years now, and it’s become a part of my life. When I’m back home in Mexico, I grow a little bit of cactus, but my main focus is spending time with my family. I’m married and have a 22-year-old son. My dad worked here for many years before me, starting back in 1990, and he was the first Mexican to work on this farm. He worked here for 27 years, and I followed in his footsteps to give my family a better life, just like he did for us.

Coming to Canada was a big decision. It was tough as a child when my dad was away for so long—it made me sad, and I missed him. Now, I understand the sacrifices he made. Working here has changed my life. I’ve been able to send my son to university and build a house in Mexico, which would have taken much longer if I had stayed working there.

On the farm here, we grow peppers and Brussels sprouts. I do different things each day, like planting and driving the tractor. My favourite part is when we’re harvesting the sprouts because it means I’m getting close to going back home. It’s always a big celebration when we return, with food and family—nothing compares to that feeling.

I love many things about Canada, especially how the work is a bit easier compared to Mexico. The weather is good when I’m here, though I make sure to leave before the snow comes. For me and the other workers, we’re doing our best every day, and I think it’s important for Canadians to know that. We work hard, but it’s worth it because of the opportunities we’ve found here.
